Watchmen

Kyle Buchanan from Movieline recently spoke with The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus director Terry Gilliam and asked him about Watchmen, a film that Gilliam failed twice to adapt from Alan Moore's graphic novel .

Here's what Gilliam said:

“I felt a lot of it was so good. It got the look of it brilliantly. But it suffered from some of the things I was having problems with when I was trying to write a script. It’s too short. It’s also too long! It’s a very weird thing and they had to make so many compromises and changes. I was always saying it should be a five-part miniseries. I still believe that. But he got the look right, and the Rorshach stuff is really, really great. I think I felt if there was any fault, it was almost too respectful of the original. It needed a kick in the ass, frankly.”

So let me get this right. Gilliam's problem with Watchmen is that it wasn't exactly the length he would have wanted it to be, and that it was too respectful to Alan Moore's work.

Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut DVD & Blu-ray

Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut DVD & Blu-ray

On November 10 Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut hits the stores on DVD and Blu-ray. It's really your choice which one you go for because apart from the Blu-ray boasting BD-Live features, they contain identical stuff.

The Ultimate Cut is the third cut of Watchmen. The first two releases were the Theatrical Cut and the Director's Cut.

Trying to find confirmation of what the exact differences are is like pulling teeth, but from what I can gather the theatrical cut is 161 minutes long, the Director's Cut is 186 minutes long, and the Ultimate Cut is 215 minutes long. A major difference is that The Ultimate Cut includes the animated story Tales of the Black Freighter woven into the actual film. This story runs for 26 minutes, which by my calculations means there is an extra 3 minutes of footage not in the Director's Cut in addition to the animated footage. And, of course, there's also tons of new extra's on the Ultimate Cut.

William Shatner accepts an award that has absolutely nothing to do with him at Spike TV's 2009 Scream Awards

William Shatner accepts an award for a film (Star Trek) that has absolutely nothing to do with him at Spike TV's 2009 Scream Awards

Spike TV's 2009 Scream Awards played out on Saturday, October 17, honoring achievements in science fiction, fantasy and horror.  These are awesome awards that make a mockery of both the Oscar's and the Emmy's, so good job Spike TV!

The big wins this year go to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, followed by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, then Twilight and True Blood.

There was a downside though. In what I consider to be worthy of the Ultimate Turd Award, William Shatner stepped up to accept the Ultimate Scream award for Star Trek. Honestly, the guy didn't star in it and admits to having never seen the film.  He's been nothing but disrespectful to the whole thing, so why he was given the opportunity to allow his ego to steal anyone else's thunder is beyond me.  To make matters worse, listen to what his all-mighty-bloatedness had to say:

"J.J., I’ll handle this. This movie was big. Imagine how big it could have been with me in it? … I’ll be waiting for your call."

Clearly everyone was in on the "surprise", but personally I found this moment to be a mockery of a great film.

Now that my rant is out of the way, check out the winners list after the jump.
