Rachel Nichols as Scarlett in 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra'
Paramount has apparently been besieged by calls from angry theater owners who aren't happy that the studio is releasing G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra on DVD and Blu-ray so soon after its theatrical release.
Though studios and theater owners have no formal agreement in place, the typical rule of thumb abided by all is that studios don't release films on DVD until a four month window has passed. In the case of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra it's been little over three months since it was released.
Responding to theater owner concerns, Paramount has announced that their decision to release the film on DVD and Blu-ray within the stock-standard four month window is not a change of policy and is an exception rather than the rule.
Their reasoning is that they want to capitalize on timing the release with the launch of Hasbro's toy line in time for the holiday season.
