Robert Downey Jr. has officially departed Alfonso Cuarón’s long-gestating sci-fi Gravity.

The ambitious but troubled movie, which has bagged Sandra Bullock for its female lead after Angelina Jolie dropped out, will be moving ahead without Downey Jr.

The actor's busy schedule is being blamed, with both Sherlock Holmes 2 and The Avengers on the horizon - but that’s not stopping other studios from attempting to lure the actor in to other roles.

20th Century Fox has confirmed that James Cameron will be pushing the back-to-back sequels to Avatar up to the top of his priority list, tying up the director until 2015. Avatar 2 will be released in December of 2014, with Avatar 3 tentatively set for a December 2015 release date.

Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox made a massive donation to James Cameron‘s environmental green fund, which led the Oscar-winning director to commit to both sequels. Check out the official press release…

Just last week, we brought you the news that Darren Aronofsky was in active negotiations with 20th Century Fox to put him in the director’s chair for X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2. Aronofsky had reportedly passed on helming Tales from the Gangster Squad, as 20th Century Fox has offered him a $ 5 million paycheck against 5% of the grosses to helm X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 instead.
