sundance 2012 daily blog day 6 78189 470 75 Sundance 2012 Daily Blog: Day 6

Filth! Total and utter filth!

Day 6 dawned with a film of such wall-to-wall smut-chat that TF almost had to cover its own ears. Except for the fact that we were loving every single four-letter-word-spitting minute of it.

The film? The slightly awkwardly-titled For A Good Time, Call…, which we’re dubbing a ‘homance’ thanks to its sex-obsessed storyline about two girl friends (Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller) who start up their own slutty chat line.

Deliriously dirty, imminently quotable, and packed with cameos (we won’t spoil them), it’s a laugh riot from start to finish – not least thanks to funny gal Graynor (think a young Bette Midler). In years to come, people will lump it in with Bridesmaids, and that’s no bad thing.

The smut kept on coming (ahem) during our chat with Save The Date stars Alison Brie and Lizzy Caplan, the latter dishing the dirt on her many sex scenes in the film.

Not that we’re all about the dirt, also taking time to grill the indie starlets on the ‘girls can be funny now’ attitude sweeping movieland, as well as future projects (“good horror scripts are so hard to find,” says Caplan).

From there it was over to 2 Days In New York, writer/director/star Julie Delpy's quirky follow-up to her 2007 indie 2 Days In Paris.

Delpy reprises her role as French artist Marion, now living in New York with new boyfriend Mingus (a surprisingly low-key Chris Rock). They're living a relatively conventional life with their two young kids, but when her dysfunctional Gallic family come to visit, madcap hilarity ensues.

A charming culture-clash comedy, the film doesn't always hit its mark - Rock's asides to a cardboard cut-out of Barack Obama fall particularly flat - but Delpy's manic, pratfall-heavy script moves at a lick and ensures plenty of laughs along the way.

Next up, Safety Not Guaranteed continued Sundance's affiliation with actors who appeared in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. In the eccentric dramedy, Aubrey Plaza plays Darius, a disenfranchised twenty-something investigating a guy who claims to know how to time travel.

Though she's best known for her caustic wit, Plaza softens off the rough edges while delivering an excess of deadpan goodness. The film's final act tonal shift will divide audiences, but in general Safety is a hilarious, character-driven film that never takes the easy route. It’ll be interesting to see how they market this one.

So that was Day 6. Tonight we’re off to have dinner with the Shadow Dancer folk ahead of the film’s official premiere tomorrow morning. As always, check back here tomorrow for our verdict on the movie…

Film of the day: The Imposter

sundance 2012 daily blog day 6 78189 01 470 75 Sundance 2012 Daily Blog: Day 6

Rounding up our day of celluloid viewing was The Imposter, a British documentary telling the story of a Texan boy who went missing and suddenly ‘reappeared’ three-and-a-half years later in Spain.

If you don't already know the story, to say any more would be to spoil the outrageous, almost unbelievable twists and turns of this dark and fascinating doc. Consistently compelling and superbly shot (the dramatic reconstruction scenes are as cinematic as any Hollywood thriller), this one is a must-see.

UFC lightweight Michael JohnsonNo one likes to lose.

The actors who walk down the red carpet at the Oscars, stopping to tell Ryan Seacrest they’re just happy to be nominated? They’re lying; they want to win. Being nominated is a tremendous accomplishment, but everyone wants to win. That way you don’t have to summon up all your acting chops to make the “I’m so happy for them” face on live television.

Like the nominees who go home without a trophy and every fighter in the world, Michael Johnson doesn’t like losing either.

Last time UFC fans saw the former Ultimate Fighter finalist, he was the latest lightweight to be caught in a submission by British standout Paul Sass. The October defeat sent the 25-year-old known as “The Menace” back to the gym in search of answers, and what he came up with is an outlook that shows that backwards step could produce forward progress, starting as early as this weekend.

“A lot went wrong,” Johnson laughed when asked to assess his last appearance. “He got me in a weird situation that I didn’t really spend a lot of time on. I got a little confused, and I had to tap before he tore my knee out of place. It was just a mistake that I had to go back and work on, and it’s definitely not happening again anytime soon.

“Sometimes losing can be good. The majority of times they’re horrible, but it’s good to have it happen early, as opposed to later on in my career. This way I actually have time to work on it, get better, and not get caught in it again.

“I went back to the drawing board, spent a lot of time with my jiu-jitsu coach and the many black belts we have in our gym down here, and we work on it every day. Next time I do see something like that, I’ll know exactly what to do, and not just sit there and think about it.”

That drawing board is located in Boca Raton, Florida, where Johnson has spent the last year as a part of the Imperial Athletics team more commonly known as “The Blackzilians.”

Training each day alongside the likes of Jorge Santiago, Gesias Cavalcante, Melvin Guillard, and Rashad Evans, Johnson has seen consistent improvement in his skills, and knows the grueling hours he spends in the gym will eventually pay dividends in the cage.

“Being down here for the last year as opposed to just getting in the game, I’ve improved dramatically. My standup has gotten way better working with Henri (Hooft) who has come over from Amsterdam. My jiu-jitsu has gotten better. Working on my wrestling with Mike Van Arsdale, it’s gone through the roof. I see myself being a better fighter every day.”

Johnson gets to put the past four-months worth of gym time to the test this weekend in Chicago when he faces Shane Roller on the preliminary portion of the UFC on FOX 2 card.

With the tremendous depth in the lightweight division, many look at this as a must-win fight for Johnson. The St. Louis native has a different way of approaching the contest, one that further shows he’s ready to take a step forward in the UFC’s most talent rich division.

“I think every fight is considered a must-win. If you want to go forward in this sport and you want to make yourself known — if you lose, you take a couple steps back, and if you win, you’re in a completely different frame of the business.

“I’m looking at this fight as one where I'm definitely improving and getting better. I’ve had a great, great training camp, and I’m ready to go out here and get a win. I definitely don’t want to sit here and take two losses in a row. That’s really hard to come back from, and then you kind of want to sit around and second-guess yourself. I would say this is a `must not lose’ as opposed to a must-win.”

Some would say the two are the same, seeing only semantic differences between must-win and must-not-lose. As Johnson explains it, the difference is in how you prepare for the fight and execute your game plan when the cage door closes.

“You’ve got to believe in yourself and your coaches. I’ve had a great training camp; all the hard work is done at this point. I’m just ready to get out here and get a fight.

“I can’t get nervous and put a lot of pressure on myself and say, `I have to win this fight. I have to win this fight.’ Everybody wants to win, it’s just one of those things where I have to take all the pressure off myself, and go out there and fight my fight. If you’ve done all the things that you need to do to this point, the win should be the easy part.”

Winning in the UFC is never easy, and Roller will be determined to bring his two-fight losing streak to a halt and hand Johnson a second consecutive loss in the process.

Johnson is confident that won’t happen, and that his meeting with the WEC veteran will be the start of a breakthrough year in 2012.

“He took this fight on short notice, so I’m really not seeing him having the wind or being in the best shape to go three rounds with me. I’m going to feel him out for the first round, put the pressure on him, and then look to finish him in the early second.

“This is definitely going to be a new start for me. I’ve taken a new approach to training; completely rededicated myself to the game. I’ve done everything necessary to be a champion in the future, and this is definitely going to be my coming out party.”

sundance 2012 daily blog day 3 78033 470 75 Sundance 2012 Daily Blog: Day 3

Day three, and the snow is back with a vengeance…

Another early morning start, TF trudged to the flicks (nearly falling arse over tit several times along the way) for Red Lights – a menacing paranormal thriller from Buried director Rodrigo Cortés.

The film tells the story of supernatural-sceptic professor Cillian Murphy, who becomes obsessed with disproving the ‘powers’ of celebrity healer Robert De Niro. As ominous events start to occur, though, it seems he might have bitten off more than he can chew…

Featuring a high-calibre support cast (Sigourney Weaver, Toby Jones, Elizabeth Olsen, Craig Roberts), the film twists and turns all the way to its WTF? ending, throwing in a handful of expertly-timed shocks along the way (it made us jump, but not half as much as the lady sat next to us…).

Desperate for a bit of light relief, TF quickly scoffed a turkey sandwich and hopped on the bus for the next theatre and film number two: teen comedy The First Time.

Written and directed by Jon ‘son of Lawrence, brother of Jake’ Kasdan, the film follows the hilariously awkward whirlwind romance of high-schoolers Dylan O'Brien (TV’s Teen Wolf) and Britt Robertson (Scream 4), as they contemplate hopping on the good foot and doing the bad thing for, you’ve guessed it, the first time.

Powered by the spot-on chemistry of its two young leads (which carried over into a post-screening chat in a pub down the road) and backed up by solid support (including Craig Roberts, again!), this charming and wittily scripted indie went down a storm with the chuckle-happy audience. One to watch, then.

Next up was the press conference for West Of Memphis, featuring surprise guest Peter Jackson - taking a break from his Hobbit duties to big up the much-talked about doc. He was joined by the film’s director Amy Berg, his wife and producer Fran Walsh, as well as two of the Memphis Three - Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin.

“This movie shows every part of what makes us human,” Jackson said. “There’s good, evil, there’s hope, despair, love, greed, kindness. Every aspect of who we are is displayed on screen by various people.”

We stayed in Park City’s snow-clogged centre for the rest of the afternoon, where we chatted with the stars of opening night Aussie film Wish You Were Here (and bumped into Joshua Jackson, who was there doing press for Lay The Favorite).

Joel Edgerton turned out to be the nicest guy we’ve ever met, while Teresa Palmer revealed that she actually grew up in Snowtown – the setting for last year’s bleak ‘true story’ chiller of the same name.

And on that happy note, it’s off to local haunt Squatters for a spot of dinner before we finish the night off with a much-needed beer at the launch of the upcoming Sundance London.

That’s right – Bob Redford is bringing his indie showcase across the pond. The line-up is yet to be announced, but don’t be surprised if some of our favourite flicks make it across to London’s O2 arena in April – head to www.sundance-london.com to book your tickets!

sundance 2012 daily blog day 2 78002 470 75 Sundance 2012 Daily Blog: Day 2

Films galore!

Day two of Sundance 2012, and we’re up at the buttcrack of dawn to watch Peter Jackson-powered documentary West Of Memphis.

Having trudged to our bus stop in the pitch black and hitched a ride to the wrong part of town (our fault, though the bus driver was very apologetic), we finally settled into a packed cinema for the hard-hitting doc.

A pseudo follow-up to 1996 doc Paradise Lost, Memphis sets out the case of the Memphis Three, a trio of teenagers jailed in the ‘90s for the murder of three eight-year-old boys.

Packing in A-list appearances (among them producer Peter Jackson and Eddie Vedder), director Amy Berg’s film is upsetting and gripping, bringing us bang up to date on the case while unravelling the central miscarriage of justice in fascinating forensic detail.

At 150 minutes, the running time is scarily close to Jackson’s LOTR films, but something tells us this’ll be the one to beat in the documentary category at the closing night awards.

Next up was California Solo, a meandering but moving portrait of a washed-up Britpop star (Robert Carlyle) who, facing deportation from his new home in the US, is forced to confront his hidden demons.

An unexpected gem, it features a stunning central performance from Carlyle – perhaps his best since Trainspotting’s Begbie – and don’t be surprised if this turns up during the 2013 awards season (think Crazy Heart with a Scottish Madchester veteran).

sundance 2012 daily blog day 2 78002 00 470 75 Sundance 2012 Daily Blog: Day 2

With the snow still falling, we huddled into our next screening – Russian drama Elena, which focussed on the titular character (Nadezhda Markina, think a doughier Frances McDormand) and her family troubles.

It’s impeccably shot, with Philip Glass adding a typically surging score that means while Elena is often ponderous and slow-moving, it’s a beauty to behold.

We barely had a chance for a wee break and a packet of crisps before it was back into the cinema for indie love story Hello I Must Be Going. Laugh-out-loud funny, Melanie Lynskey’s on fine form as a recent divorcee struggling to get her life back on track.

Featuring some hysterical zingers from Blythe Danner, Hello I Must Be Going manages to balance genuine tenderness with massive guffaws (not to mention some of the steamiest automobile action since Titanic). Flawed, but easily one of our favourites so far.

Capping things off, we (somehow) squeezed into doc Queen Of Versailles. An extremely funny yet cautionary tale of the dangers of excess, the film follows the fortunes of billionaire couple Jackie and David Siegel.

Halfway through construction on a $ 100 milion, 90,000 sq ft family home inspired by the court of Louis XIV, the couple are suddenly hit hard by the economic crisis. It’s hardly a riches-to-rags tale, but the pair make for fascinating and likeable subjects who aren’t afraid to show off their flaws.

While we were standing in the queue, news started flowing that the film has already been picked up for distribution in the US, so expect to see it doing the rounds soon.

Now we’re off to catch Emily Blunt in My Sister’s Sister, before joining her for what’s bound to be a happenin’ after party. Wonder if they’ll serve cups of tea…

Films seen so far: 7

Quote of the day: "Shit must taste good, a million flies can't be wrong" - Elena

Momentous mishap: Snow on head incident - chilly.

Let's face it: Elizabeth will be found alive at some point on White Collar, following her fall finale kidnapping at the hands of Neal's rival, Keller.

But that doesn't mean everything will be okay between Peter and Neal when this USA hit returns next week. Far from it, in fact.

Watch the latest preview now for the January 17 premiere and witness Peter's reaction to learning that Neal was in possession of the U-boat treasure all along. Considering the resulting danger that secret has placed his wife in, it's hard to see how this pair will mend fences any time soon...

Thanks to the good folks at The CW, I was fortunate enough to ring in 2012 by watching a screener of this Thursday's new episode of The Vampire Diaries.

So, what will be the deal with "The New Deal?" You'll need to wait until 8 p.m. on January 5 to find out, but I'll be teasing one spoiler over each of the next five days until then. Whet your appetite for the blood-sucking goodness to come below...

Klaus vs. Damon

Teaser #1: Someone leaves Mystic Falls.

Forever? I doubt it, but the set up makes perfect sense and doesn't really leave a door open for this individual to return. Yes, it's a key character and, yes, tears are shed during his/her goodbye.

Let the guessing games begin!
