The Fourth Kind movie

The movie The Fourth Kind, a title which refers specifically to alien abduction (the fourth type of alien encounter), purports to be based upon real events.  But is it?

All promotion for the film, including the trailer, puts forward the notion that the film is a "fact-based" thriller. The facts, as promoted by the film, seem to be:

  • evidence of alien abduction were uncovered inadvertently from patients in a sleep disorder study
  • the study was conducted by a psychologist by the name of Dr. Abigail Tyler
  • the abductions were/are occurring in and around Nome, Alaska
  • the FBI have conducted numerous but unresolved investigations of missing persons in the area

If you visit the official website, you won't find any links to any of the apparent "fact-based" evidence. Yes, there are some interesting links to some cool "conspiracy" (I hate that word) style websites, but nothing to corroborate the basis of The Fourth Kind movie.

I did a search to discover the authenticity of the title character, Dr. Abigail Tyler, and discovered an entry in the Alaska Psychiatry Journal and a twitter account: @drabigailtyler.  Both relate to viral marketing for the film. The twitter account is clearly a twitter account to promote the film, and certainly not the "real" Dr. Abigail Tyler. The Alaska Psychiatry Journal was only recently registered, in Arizona (not Alaska) and via proxy, and like the twitter account, is clearly not real.

Milla Jovovich, who I love to death, is the lead in the film. In the trailer she announces to the camera: “This film is a dramatization of events that occurred Oct. 2000. Every scene in this movie is supported by archive footage. Some of what you're about to see is extremely disturbing.”

Watch the trailer now:

Unfortunately the archive footage has either never been released or doesn't exist. It is doubtful that, if it is the most compelling alien abduction footage yet recorded, that it could have remained hidden whilst a film is made based upon it and, moreso, that it would remain hidden once knowledge of the film had become public. Since this is exactly what has happened, it stands to reason that the archive footage is also fiction.  Though I might add that the film may still be using archive footage from other alien abduction cases that are not mentioned in the marketing of The Fourth Kind.

So what about those missing person cases?  Turns out they are actually true and yes, the FBI have been investigating.  Whilst some answers have been found relating to some of the missing persons - and bodies found - the circumstances of the cases remain unsolved to this day.

I found this article on the Red Lake Net News website which, since it appears to be a legitimate news item, might corroborate the story. It states the FBI have received 24 cases to investigate dating back to 1960. Of those, all are Natives, seventeen were men, eight were never found, and the rest died under suspicious circumstances. More than half of the missing person's bodies have actually been found with the cause of death attributed to a combination of alcohol and exposure.  So it's definitely a mystery, but sounding less and less like alien abduction (and more and more like foul play).  In any case, it seems the locals don't seem to think it is aliens causing the problem.

So, in a nutshell, the basis for the film seems to be fiction with a touch of reality thrown in to add to our confusion. But, I think it is safe to say that The Fourth Kind is not a story about an actual event with actual documented archival footage. Instead, it is a very cool and elaborate film that appears to have woven a little fact with a lot of fiction to create a realism that delivers maximum creepiness.

Real or not, I'll be heading to the theater to see The Fourth Kind because it looks cool, and that's all I really care about.

OOO i like Mike G. My favorite line of all time has got to be “It is a matter of national security.” what the frack kind of bs is that? OMG to those people that say our government wouldnt do anything to harm us look up Plum Island, That chemicals in the air, bildagurge, or simply what the conspiracy theory with Jesse Ventura. Great show. But some people are dumb enough to believe that. As long as people are going to deny what should be “common knowledge” and choose to remain in the dark this will continue to happen i just wanna get a few kicks pissing them off before i kick the… alien. Mike ive never of plasma balls before lol

    Worst film I ever see.

    Totally waste of time.

Better watching Discovery Channel on any Kind of the Encounter.

All in the film is totally made. No “real footage”, not even 1/50 second. My daughter laughs when she see the “film-frame” of the DIGITAL vdo tape recorder!!

Grade C movie + Grade A advertising trick!

    • wow says:

Let me help you type your words correctly. First off, your opening sentence should read, “worst film I’VE ever SEEN. Then the next part containing the “Discovery Channel” is just an odd thing to say, I’m not even sure what you are trying to get across with that one. Next let me pick apart this one, “All in the film is totally made. No “real footage”, not even 1/50 second. My daughter laughs when she see the “film-frame” of the DIGITAL vdo tape recorder!!” WOW. I’ll just retype it the way it should have been in the first place. EVERYTHING in THIS film is totally made UP. No real footage, not even A FRACTION OF A second. My daughter laughs when she SEES the STILL FRAME of the digital VIDEO tape recorder.
I really do agree with you Papa but seriously, doesn’t anyone proof read what they have written before hitting “submit” anymore? What is wrong with you people? You have good arguments but your lack of the proper use of the english language makes you sound ignorant. Please change this

      • Grewn says:

You say that other person should have written “made up”. That’s ending a sentence with a preposition; not proper grammer and “english” is supposed to be capitalized. Don’t throw stones, you twit.

Perhaps you and little Giggles would feel more at home with Spongebob

    • B-Ran-Done says:

Seriously…what dimension are you living in, Phun Pop? Whether true or fiction the film is a fantastic piece of work which will stimulate conversations and encourage the seeking of truth for years to come.

      Grade C- comment + Grade A+ film.

i love the part when the tape says “i am god” that got me creeped out and thinking and it just scared me i wished we knew what the blanked out parts were but i loved it i would like some info on that part

You did a great job on laying out the facts (or lack thereof) for the film. I found it a very interesting movie and quite engaging though I doubted the veracity but thought it was put together well. Would be interesting to actually look at Sumerian evidence to see if such depictions of ‘spaceships’ actually exist in the historical record. Also nice to see Mila in a role that isn’t about shooting things up or exposing her body. I think she did a good job!

  • Rich says:

Really, to my mind, this film is closer to the Exorcist than Close Encounters of the 4th Kind. Rather than emphasize demonic possession by an ancient deity who is in league with the devil or is the devil himself, we have aliens who speak Sumerian and are terrorizing residents in Alaska (and presumably terrorized ancient man to become entered into our collective unconscious in the form of the devil). And the aliens are still active in Alaska to this day and are continuing the experiments.

This film is most effective when seen without any information about the posited ‘facts’ or background of the film. I suppose your belief or lack thereof in religion may affect the enjoyment of this film. I think someone from the Christian faith, if they accepted the film as reality, would scoff and think it was demonic possession or a fraud. Someone from a secular background, if they accepted the film as reality, would be more likely to think that space aliens are real and get the ‘willies’ (and not think of a religious/supernatural solution).

A Christian laugh at this film? Probably. An atheist laugh at The Exorcist? Probably.

  • ebneila says:

Again, I am astounded at how one film could have garnered so many comments, (104 since 10-11-09). It demonstrates how the subject of alien abduction and the nature of the abductors has stimulated the imagination. Even if the film placed it’s own credibility in doubt by claiming to be a semi-documentary, still managed to be very effective in concept.
From tattered fragments of Sumerian codices, ancient scribes and bards spoke of times lost; of secret places and dark sayings only hinted. Like children today, contemplating who hears their prayers, old men stood in awe of these things. So mis-understood as the folly of religious custom, they pondered workings of far older minds

  • Grewn says:

The truth is out there; online I mean:) YouTube: Steven Greer or National Press Club Aliens. Do a search for “Discloser Project”. This film actually perpetuates the set-agenda of the people that have a vested interest to keep you in the dark. Or don’t inform yourself and be taken by surprise when the powers that be start spilling their lies about this subject.

  • All the time i trusted but i dont realy trust now, because is end on tipe the alien say ” i am god “.. looks like a stupid god than will say like this.. and all the things hard to believe… mmm i can trust it if i get proof.. if i go there and see by my self.. right now i dont realy belive (:

  • DEB says:

THE MOVIE WAS GOOD AND GIVES OUR SOCIETY SOMETHG TO THINK ABOUT. CAN ANYONE WITH REAL INTELLIGENCE REALLY BE NARCISSTIC ENOUGH TO BELIEVE WE ARE THE ONLY EXISTANCE IN THE UNIVERSE! COME ON, GIVE IT SOME SERIOUS THOUGHT…THE MOVIE, I DONT KNOW IF IT WAS TRUE OR NOT, BUT STILL AM AM DENYING OTHERS EXIST BESIDES HUMANS!

  • oliver says:

I saw the movie and I must say that the real videos seemed very convincing , but there are things i wondered about:
[ps: these conclusions are just opinions nothing more]

    1. why did the policeman “august” still had doubt of the incident when it has been recorded? (i don’t think he refuses to believe, but he’s hiding something )

2.why did the “aliens” abducted several people but they released them all except her daughter ?

3.why did dr. abel refused to give a comment as we see in the end, why didn’t he just say that nothing happened, the woman was lying ? (unless that something happened that night whether it was aliens or real life situation that needs to hide)

FOR ME, I don’t believe in abduction, but I don’t deny the existence of aliens.. ANY WAY , GREAT MOVIE!

  • lisa says:

it is sad that so many do not believe in just about anything.and others want to boast and take credit for nothing.life from other than ourselves does exist.but is from heaven and hell.and they will be here soon for all the world to see.i pity those that are not ready.and tell others have faith.

    • Bettina says:

Well, rest assured that whatever you want to call it (heaven, hell, aliens)there is more to the nature of reality than what we can see. That’s what is so fun about movies like this – they make you think about the unknowable. Fortunately, there is no ‘one’ way to have faith – just think what a small world it would be if there was only one true religion.

  • ebneila says:

If One reads the Old Testiment, Chapter 6:1-6, you see there is an agenda by God(s)to keep humans form gaining knowlege from an older order that was destroyed before the last creation. Apparently there was a time when the “Sons of God” (Nefilim/ETs)openly cosorted with human women who bore children that were demi-gods, half human/half alien. God spoke of sin but sin had little to do with violating the Ten Commandments and more to do with keeping humans away from forbidden wisdom of the old order before Eden. Read Genesis 3:22,11:6-7. Why would God delare; “…Be fruitful and multiply, and REPLENISH the earth…”?-(Ge.1:28) Replenish means to; RE-populate. If there had not been an older world that perished, there would be no need to repopulate. The key can be found in, Gen 2:1-4 where God had ended his earlier creation Gen 2:2-3. To verify this, read; “…and there was not a man to till the ground” until the last creation of human was placed in Eden, Gen 2:5-8. The warning against forbidden wisdom: Gen Gen 3:5.
Bottom line, in ancient times, humans and ETs enteracted and crossbred regularly. Modern abductions could be result of ETs checking on these ancient blood lines

    • Brian says:

So im not a religious man at all, but am very openminded. When you say “ET” you mean god or ailens????? Do you believe their is more than one god or the “ET” is god and we bred with him????? I am not sure about a god creating us but believing that a old world existed and it is covered up is totally up for grabs… We came from somewhere and if their is a god he is not really a god in my mind but a more powerful race that was placed in our universe and evolved like we have evolved. I dont know man do any of us really know? I would love nothing more than to think a heaven waits for me cause I am a good person who only helps others, but it is so hard to believe something you were never raised with. But evolution and the past??? shit anything is possible, old rase, aliens from the past, gods, their all the same just one is more advanced than the other. I mean billions of years have passsed before we were ever created by evolution of god, what if in those billions of years a rase survived forund out how to create life out of simple compounds and we are the result, if so well I guess they would be our creator and our god, but does that make him or her or it really a god or just a smart son of a bitch who created life on the outer rim of a galaxy. Just some food for thought. I love exploring all ideas and the ideas of others. You seemed like the only one to respond too that may actually have some real cool ideas.

    • Mike says:

Finally thoughts and information based on historical documentation and not just an opinion. Impressive.
The idea of God’s (plural) seems to upset the Christians that i talk to. It is written clearly enough, but most seem more comfortable skimming over this fact and avoiding any dissusions of the printed words.
I have noticed that the chruch has been changing their stance on alien exsistance in recent years. I have seen many interviews where, for lack of a better word, employees of the established churches have backed off the demonization of such entities. The Church has vast knowledge that it has kept locked away from common man. With the extensive advent of information sharing across the planet, I think they realize that their controll of information and the reality of God may soon be out of their controll. If they do not admit to the exsistance of other intellengent life they will loose control when it arrives or at least becomes unarguable.
For many who find comfort in ignorace, they will remain that way.

  • jamie clarke says:

firstly the film itself is really good i think. but to the question of is it real or not?, sadly the answer is NO, the “real” footage is not real the “real” Dr Abby Tyler is played by a british actor called (Charlotte Milchard), so if this is “real footage” then why are they using actors. if the people involved in what “happend” didnt want to be recognised then why didnt it say at the begining of the film this film is based on true events with ll people involved portrayed by actors

  • jeff terr says:

just watched this movie, though it is creepy it is obvious that this is a work of fiction ah la “Blair Witch” and “Paranormal Activity”.The threads of fact running through this movie are extremly thin.

  • Charle says:

I THINK IT WAS A GREAT MOVIE. ITS INTERESTING THAT PEOPLE DOUBT THE ABDUCTIONS, BUT BELIEVE THE FBI SAYING ABOUT 20 PEOPLE WHO DIED/DISAPPEARED (OF WHICH 9 BODIES WERE NEVER FOUND) CONSUMED HIGH DOSAGES OF ALCOHOL AND/OR HAD SUICIDAL TENDENCIES… THAT SEEMS A BIT HARD TO SWALLOW. ANYWAY, I ENJOYED THE MOVIE AND STILL HAVE MY DOUBTS ABOUT THE FBI’S REPORTS/EXPLANATION.

  • sondra says:

All tho I have never seen the movie neiter of the 2 times I vied it from yhe very beginning. I saw enough to know I don’t want to and wont..nornaly I would never dream of feeling this way about a movie but there was an emptyness that I felt a long with an errieness that I have never in my life ever felt before and and my gut tells me to leave it alone. me I just wanna figure everything out. BUT NOT THIS TIME

  • Twiddle Dee says:

I think what I’m reading here is that most do not feel the movie is real in another language.. Personally I think everyone should focus on the topic and try to read between the lines of less intelligent beings..Who cares if they can’t write..you get the message loud and clear I’m sure.

I LIKE the movie, do not profess to be a film critic or know about splicing or replicating, for that matter all I did was watch it. Whether the “archived footage” was from one incident or never happened at all, is fine with me, it did a job..SCARED ME ENOUGH FOR ME TO HAVE TROUBLE SLEEPING”

I must admit that I am the perhaps 1% that may feel that there is intelligence out there, there are far too many unexplained disappearances, and eye witnesses to discard the notion, that we are alone

    • Charle says:

I agree with you! I also had trouble sleeping that night after watching it. I am also of the opinion that there is a possibility of some kind of intelligence somewhere in the universe, maybe much closer than we think…

  • troyboy says:

are the police footage real from the cars if so by law it should not be fake or a lie other wise criminals who have been arrested by the polie officers could say they were framed set up that sort of palarver

  • Autumn says:

A.) In the beginning of the movie, Milla states that the names of the characters have been changed. (In regards to Dr. Abigail Tyler-probably not the real Dr.’s name.
B.) Check out the Sumerian people (research)
C.) Abel did piss me off to by not saying anything
D.) Who was that little girl in the photos? Is she a missing child?
E.)In some of the archived-footage, the person who we think is the Dr. looks a little different than Charlotte M., who portaryed Dr. Tyler.
E.) The eye witness statements at the end are definitely real
F.) Some of this movie definitely hyped up, some of it is based on truth, possible some real footage.
G.) We really are not alone, I have honestly seen many unexplained objects in the sky, day and night and I am extremely intelligent. Have you all seen “The Phoenix Lights” Real Documentary/Real Footage This film was excellent and is very frightening and the fact that the FBI has been to Nome how many times???? Something is happening, and we all know that they cover up, remember Marilyn Monroe’s death? Cover ups exist and so do UFO’s and aliens.

  • Trigjosh says:

I went to see this movie, knowing already that it was probably fake and incorporated viral ads (I collect movies – I have over a thousand, and I’ve studied script writing as part of my degree). This trend of making films appear real is an important part of the experience so I spplaude it totally. The Fourth Kind was an excellent blend of fact and fiction, and played on people’s insecurities and curiosity, I absolutely thought it was brilliant. Loved the psychological aspect of it, I’ve studied Psychology too, the use of this was an excellent ploy of possible realism by using authoratative figures or professional people we trust to add weight and depth to the story. Fantastic film – this and the Paranormal Activity films have got to rank amongst the best of this millenium.

  • Charle says:

There will always be opinions against and for the issues raised here, but one thing is for sure: There have been cover-ups in the past and there will be many more. Why? I don’t know.

  • bdogxxl says:

Well, I know for one it is real. I have been to level two so far. Seeing the actual evidence of the UFO. The movie is based off of real audio recordings. Sumerian voice is for one real. I read about them in school in The 7TH grade and ill have you know I’m only in 8TH grade. “Sumer” was the “supposed” 1st civilization that settled between the Tigris and Euphrates river in an area called the “Fertile Crescent”. What happened in Nome Alaska can be lead to dementia because of the sun always being up. But they are being put under hypnosis to tell their story. And also how the movie has an affect on me. I now sleep with my door locked and my 12 gauge in my closet. It’s amazing what things can do with your head. Although only being on the 2ND kind is freaky enough. The one UFO is saw was this (search this on Google.)- UFO over Kokamo Indiana and it was so huge me and my Grandma (who i was with at the time) could see it from Brownsburg, Indiana when Kokamo was a good 1hr and 1/2 away. It was very creepy. Its amazing how many more we began seeing later. This is a real movie with real evidence.

  • ebneila says:

I’m not sure how your thesis is relevant to the subject of abductions or ETs. “Diana” and your host of friends seem more interested in technical aspects of a You Tube video(?) Do you have any comments of the subject at hand?
