'Doctor Who': Matt Smith could be the best Doctor yet

There are those who think David Tennant's version of The Doctor in Doctor Who is the best ever.  He's been voted as such in Doctor Who magazine amongst other places multiple times.  Then there are those who are probably too old to care about voting but who, if you cornered them at the coffee shop one Sunday morning, would happily argue that Tom Baker is the man.  As of this moment in time, I'm definitely on the Tom Baker side of the fence.

Don't get me wrong, David Tennant is great as the Timelord but let's be honest, he does overact at times.  I've had plenty of 'arg' moments when watching him as The Doctor, but I can't say I ever had one of those moments with Tom Baker.  Baker was, consistently, awesome.  For my money Tom Baker is the best ever, and Tennant is a close second.

Which brings me to the point of my article.  When Matt Smith was announced as David Tennant's replacement, a lot of fans cringed.  Apart from being relatively unknown, few could believe that The Doctor would now be portrayed by a 26 year old.

I, however, took one look at him and thought he had an interesting look, one that just might fit a new direction for the character.  I didn't know anything about him and have done my best to check out his past performances, well, as many as I could find.  The result is I'm now firmly convinced that Matt Smith is going to take the world of Doctor Who by storm.

In one sense Smith is lucky.  No one expects him to be as good as his predecessor David Tennant.  But then, few expected Tennant to be as good as  Christopher Eccleston.

I saw a quote recently by David Tennant where he said in a few years people would say Matt Smith is the best Doctor ever, and right now I'm thinking those words may turn out to be more prophetic than anyone presently thinks.

Now to a clip.  A deleted flashback scene from the film In Bruges has been gaining notoriety since it surfaced, as it showcases a little of Smith's talent. Check it out but be warned, it's a little graphic for some people to stomach.
