Challenge extended, Darren Criss.

A few hours after Fox released the full performance of this Glee cast member leading a rendition of Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin Something," the network has also given us a glimpse at Naya Rivera and Grant Gustin - as Santana and Sebastian, respectively - going head to head on the King of Pop's "Smooth Criminal."

And it's pretty awesome.

Accompanied by nothing but a couple cellos, watch these characters circle each other below, as Santana will be seeking justice on Tuesday's episode following some sort of dastardly deed by Gustin's evil warbler...

I liked Glee's Michael Jackson tribute episode a lot more than I thought I would. A backward compliment? Sure. But, hey, it's still a compliment.

Unlike past tribute episodes - to Britney Spears, to Christmas - this one managed to weave in a few key developments, mostly basing its MJ covers around ongoing storylines and legitimate character realizations...

... with the exception of Artie's totally random moment of anger, which resulted in an imagined "Scream" performance and an imagined few minutes of Artie walking around that served as an example of everything Glee can do so wrong: ignoring all logic and continuity for the sake of a song it can sell on iTunes.

MY EYES!

But I'll ignore that - and also ignore the fact that these kids are 16-18 years old, and Jackson last released an album in 2001, and, as harsh as it sounds, until he died, his music was NOT what most people talked about any time the icon came up, making it hard to believe today's high school kids would really worship the guy and constantly talk about "WWMJD?" - in order to focus on the positive aspects of the episode. They include:

Sebastian. Give it up for a true villain! We all love Sue Sylvester, but she's really just a quote machine at this point. Viewers can't take her seriously. Certainly not when compared to a guy that fills a slushee with rock salt.

There's been talk of making Grant Gustin a series regular on season four and I'd be all for it. Just don't even try to soften him up, Glee. There's nothing wrong with having a sincere antagonist for the group to rally against, especially when it leads to Santana threatening to go "all Danny LaRusso" on his ass. That was awesome.

Finchel. They clearly should not get married, not when each of them is essentially saying they need the other person in their life because, well, they don't have much else in their life. That's not a healthy outlook on love.

But I definitely appreciated the extra attention given to the proposal here; the duet they sang; Finn's commitment to making the most important question he'll ever ask more memorable than a quick, unexpected speech in the auditorium; and what can only be described as a hesitant yes from Rachel, at least once she realized how she shared the huge NYADA news with someone else prior to her fiance. Heck, what she even thinking of Finn at the time?

Quinn's negative advice to Rachel - you don't want an anchor from the past holding you back from the bright lights of the future - is pretty much magazine-spewing nonsense. If you love someone, you love someone. Period. But is this true love? Or is it high school love? Would Finn complete her, or hold her back?

The performances. They were great. That's never my issue with Glee. We all know how talented the cast is; I just often take exception when Glee comes across more like a concert (or, even worse, a PDA-inspired concert) than a television show and I vehemently disagree with those who somehow claim we shouldn't expect strong storytelling just because the characters sing.

(Watch Smash on Monday. Trust me, you can have both.)

So I'm happy to give props to my favorite covers here, which were led by Santana and Sebastian's simple, cello-accompanied "Smooth Criminal" and which concluded with the whole group nailing "Black or White," including a version of the face morphing MJ made famous in that video.

What didn't work for me? Anything involving Quinn. Sorry, the show ruined her forever in my book when she went all nutso in an attempt to get her daughter back.

Similarly, I feel no emotional attachment to Sam and Mercedes. As I said in my last review, we saw these two holding hands once, and we've barely seen more of Mercedes and Shane. It's times like these when my irritation grows because it wouldn't have been challenging to have built up an actual love triangle, or to actually have given Mercedes something to do outside of New Directions. That way, a duet such as the one here would have felt earned, not contrived.

Also: Did the group really choose to perform a number instead of go to the police with evidence of the rock salting? (And wouldn't remnants of the slushee also be pretty good evidence? Wouldn't doctors have picked up on the substance in Blaine's eyes?) That might be the most Glee-ish storyline ever. I don't mean that as a compliment.

But there I go being negative again. So I'll turn this over to the readers. What was your favorite cover? Is it believable that kids born in 1995 would be this into Michael Jackson? Will Rachel eventually turn Finn down? Should she?

In April, members of New Directions will be come down with a case of Saturday Night Fever.

Indeed, they'll be Stayin Alive, Stayin Alive, as Glee creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed to TV Guide Magazine that an episode in honor of The Bee Gees is on tap for this spring.

"We've never done disco on the show," Murphy tells William Keck, adding that his fantasy is to recruit John Travolta for a cameo because the Saturday Night Fever star and Cory Monteith are friends. "Maybe we'll have them dance in a Finn dream sequence."

Glee will also be airing a tribute to Michael Jackson in the very near future, and returns tomorrow night with its first new episode of 2012.

Scream it out loud, Gleeks: this Fox hit will be Startin' Somethin' on January 31, as Glee is getting ready to rock with Michael Jackson.

Fresh off an episode that crammed many storylines into a single hour, the upcoming installment appears to have a far narrower focus, as viewers will be moonwalking along to covers of iconic singles originated by The King of Pop.

They also might find out Rachel's answer for Finn.

We've posted a number of photos from "Michael" below, along with the official Fox trailer. Click around now, prepare for Sebastian to cause problems and sound off: Are you excited for this tribute episode?

New year. New Glee! Following a Christmas episode for which I could not hide my disdain, that was the attitude I adopted heading into the winter premiere, "Yes/No."

It lasted about .07 seconds, I'm sorry to say.

Within the first five minutes, this was the random sequences of events thrown our way: an immediate cover of "Summer Nights" from Grease; the announcement that Beiste and Cooter eloped; a Becky-based narration by Helen Mirren because people with Down's Syndrome can apparently sound however they want to inside their head and because, hey, isn't it hilarious to hear a British Oscar winner say the words "bitch" and "reals?!?"

Oh, and the most ridiculous, hardest to believe storyline of all: that Will Schuester plays fantasy football.

Singing While Swimming

Look, I get the argument that Glee is simply meant as a fun distraction for an hour. It's just about singing and laughing and dancing and people like myself shouldn't bother to analyze its lack of storytelling or direction because that isn't what the show is about.

I don't buy the argument - because Ryan Murphy and company have come out many times and said they have grand, societal messages in mind when it comes to the show, meaning the creator himself has said this is really intended as the polar opposite of a carefree, mindless experience - but, hey, I have no problem with those who want to sit back and let the music wash over them.

But an episode such as this made one haphazard effort after another to try and tell multiple stories, to try and develop various characters. It wanted fans to be fully invested in supposedly heartfelt moments... but I couldn't have been the only viewer shaking my head when the plot wanted me to be wiping my eyes.

You know how we're always talking about moving toward marriage? Emma asked Will at one point and I wanted to scream: NO! WE CERTAINLY DON'T KNOW THAT AT LEAST! THE SHOW GOES WEEKS AT TIMES WITHOUT GIVING US A SINGLE WEMMA SCENE! WHY WOULD WE HAVE ANY CLUE YOU TWO WERE HEADED IN THAT DIRECTION?!?

After spending two seasons actually planting decent seeds for this potential couple, Glee held down the fast forward button, just got them together in the offseason, ignored them for months and asked us to believe they were each other's soulmates. I was incredibly impressed by the choreography of the proposal scene, but I couldn't have cared less about the proposal itself. You can't just decide to tug at my heart strings one week, Glee. You need to earn it.

Moreover: come on. Are we meant to believe that Will really doubted his future with Emma because of her disease? Or that he has zero friends? (What about his pals in his fantasy football league?!?) Finn takes him ring shopping? Finn is his best man? Why not develop Will as an actual human being, not just a prop through which New Directions can sing and whine? That's really all this proposal was about, an excuse for the club to take on a new assignment.

Yes, Will used his proposal as a school assignment. What a complete tool.

Relatedly, Finn asked Rachel to marry him. Some may have taken his gold star-inspired speech as beautiful; I took it as pathetic. It's not a romantic notion to propose because the only meaning you have in life is your love for someone else. Your love should not define you, it should complete you (right, Jerry Maguire?). Yes, it does make sense that Finn would feel so lost and confused after hearing such news about his father, but about that:

WTH?!? I see no reason to believe everything about this story wasn't written the day before shooting. From Finn wanting to join the army, to the out-of-left-field admission by his mother, to his question for Rachel... again, no build-up, no investment. Just an utter lack of quality storytelling all around, and all in the name of trying to shock viewers with an ending they can talk about the next morning.

When was the last time Finn even mentioned his father? Now he wants to follow in his footsteps... wait, now he learns some seriously horrifying information... wait, now Kurt is somehow turning this into a sob story about his future at NYADA... and wait, now Finn is proposing. Seriously, that ALL happened in this one episode and that was just one of maybe six storylines the show spewed forth. What's the rush, writers?

This could have been a fascinating arc for Finn if the show possessed a shred of patience. It could have felt like actual character development, stretched over the course of multiple episodes, instead of a series of random events crammed into one hour at the last second.

It's just the same for everything else about the episode. We literally saw Mercedes holding Sam's hand for one second at the end of one episode. Now she's singing about him and fantasizing about him and Glee wants us to root for these two because... because it's in the script, that's pretty much the only reason.

And did NeNe Leakes really make a pun about 40 Acres and a Mule, the post Civil War act that provided land to former slaves? What the heck is going on here?

I know it isn't fun to read a critic bashing a show you like. And my intention is not to belittle those who still get enjoyment out of Glee each week. But it's my job to write an honest assessment and, my goodness, the wheels have fallen off here faster than whatever storylines the show will burn through in two weeks when it returns... with a random Michael Jackson tribute episode. Sigh.

What did you think, Gleeks? Did your heart burst at Will's proposal? Or do you wish we had spent more time with this couple prior to the big development? And what about Finchel? Will Rachel say yes? Should she? Debate these questions now, browse through my favorite Glee quotes from the hour and also check out the following Glee music from the episode:

We can, and undoubtedly will, continue to argue about my take on this week's Glee episode, but hopefully we can all get excited together over the following show scoop:

Glee has cast Rachel's two dads!

Goldblum photoStokes Photo

The roles that have been discussed almost since we met young Ms. Berry will go to Jeff Goldblum and Brian Stokes Mitchell, Michael Ausiello reports, and both will debut on the February 14 Valentine's Day-inspired episode of the series.

Goldblum is a veteran of the big and small screen (Jurassic Park, Law & Order: Criminal Intent), while Stokes is best known for his experience on Broadway (Man of La Macha, Kiss Me Kate.)

No word yet on what brings Rachel's parents into the picture, but it's safe to assume it's related to a certain question Finn posed to his girlfriend this week. Does this mean she'll say yes? SHOULD she say yes?

Fox President Kevin Reilly confirmed yesterday that Glee will not be spun off in any way - but that doesn't mean season four won't look very different from anything we've seen previously on the show.

Look for Rachel, Kurt and the senior class to graduate, while likely still being involved in some capacity. New characters, meanwhile, will step up, with E! News reporting Grant Gustin may very well be promoted to series regular status in time for the fall.

Grant Gustin on Glee

Gustin - who plays evil, Blaine-desiring Warbler Sebastian - will recur throughout this winter and spring, playing an especially major role in the upcoming Michael Jackson tribute episode.

A source says a new deal for Gustin has been discussed, but the show is "not finalizing any season four regulars until May," while the actor Tweeted last night: "Thanks for all the congrats but this news is not official as of yet."

Still, the likelihood seems strong. Do you wanna see Sebastian as a regular on Glee?

Grant Gustin may or may not be promoted on season four of Glee.

But he'll definitely be doing some damage on the show's upcoming Michael Jackson tribute episode.

Blaine vs. Sebastian

The actor spoke to E! News last night and said his villainous Warbler will "inflict pain on somebody" early on in the installment, leading to Santanta confronting Sebastian at Dalton Academy - and the two breaking into a rendition of "Smooth Criminal."

Gustin will actually be involved in two numbers beyond this, as well: "Bad" and an unnamed Jackson 5 single.

What other iconic MJ tracks will be covered on the episode? According to TV Guide's William Keck, who was on set for filming:

  • Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - Blaine
  • Rock with You - Sebastian and the Warblers
  • Bad - Artie, Santana, Blaine, Sebastian
  • Scream - Artie and Mike
  • Never Can Say Goodbye - Quinn
  • Human Nature/ Nature Boy (mash-up of MJ and Nat King Cole) - Mercedes & Sam
  • Ben - Finn, Rachel and Kurt
  • I Just Can't Stop Loving You - Finn and Rachel
  • Black or White - Artie, Rachel, Kurt, Mercedes and Santana

Warning: this could get ugly.

Two TV Fanatic staff members - Matt Richenthal and Chris O'Hara - have opposing takes on this week's Glee Christmas episode. The former thought it was essentially an hour-long promotion for the show's latest CD, lacking plot, logic and direction. The latter... thought otherwise.

Read through both sides in the following edition of the Glee Round Table and then sound off with your opinion.

-------------------------------------------

What was your favorite song from the episode?
Matt: There certainly were many to choose from. I'll say "Let It Snow" because I enjoy the track so much anyway, and I also got a kick out of Kurt and Blaine's choreography.

Chris: One of my favorite Christmas songs of all time: “All I Want for Christmas.” I almost chose Rory’s “Blue Christmas” because it evoked one of my favorite quotes of the night from Santana: “God that song was so depressing I may actually be dead right now!

Glee RT New

Harder to believe: That a Jewish Rachel would get THAT into Christmas or the kids could only help at the homeless shelter that one night?
Matt: The former, and here is why: did anyone else catch the "Happy Hanukah" at the very end? As the camera was panning away from the merry Gleeks? I am 100% sure that was a voiceover thrown in at the end because someone realized, right before editing wrapped, that they forgot Rachel was Jewish and tried to cover. That's just beyond lame. She's the main character on the show!

Full disclosure: I'm Jewish. I grew up with stockings. Jews are clearly allowed to celebrate Christmas, but not to that extreme; or not at least without one simple throwaway line earlier that at least acknowledged the writers were aware of her religion.

Chris: I think the issue was that Sue had promised a performance by the New Directions on said night, not so much that it was the only night they could volunteer. That being said, Rachel as the girl who cried Christian was not totally beyond her annoying abilities but by abandoning her heritage she short changed herself out of three more gifts. Why settle for five things off her list when she could have had eight to coincide with each night of Hanukkah?

Was Artie's PBS special a great gift or a lump of coal?
Matt: I was at a loss for words during it. It was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen on television, considering how long it went on for and how pointless it was in the scheme of... anything. Oh, and no way that set cost under $ 800.

Chris: I really enjoyed the special, from its laugh track-laden lines to Finn’s slightly askew light saber. Kurt and his best friend/holiday roommate put on quite a unique show in their bachelor chalet.

Will Sam and Quinn get back together?
Matt: I really hope not. Quinn needs to be on her own for a long while. Girl has to learn to love herself before anyone else can try to do it.

Chris: I think Trouty Mouth will snog Pouty Lips before the season is out for sure. Sam seems to have a calming effect on Quinn and after Rory helps him perfect his Sean Connery impression, she will be putty in his hands.

Give the first half of the season a grade.
Matt: C. There are times when I have hope that actual character arcs will play out - such as the class Presidency race and Santana's sexuality - and then there are episodes such as this that air as if those and other storylines never took place. I just want some structure to the season. Is that too much to ask?

Chris: I gotta give the first half an A with a gold star for sure. I’ve loved how the show’s focus has moved onto other characters, while still permitting it’s big stars like Sue to shine.

We are not here to once again debate the merits of this year's Glee Christmas episode. You may do that by jumping in to our most recent Round Table discussion.

Instead, we're here to post a performance that was deleted from the installment, as Naya Rivera got her sexy Santa on for a rendition of a holiday classic that was cut from the final, edited broadcast.

Watch now as Santana and Finn frequent a jewelry store and the former gives the patrons a number they are unlikely to ever forget:
