So you have all the t-shirts, posters, key rings and decorative floor mats from your favorite movie or TV series? Well as impressive as that is, all the really cool kids have been including the Press Kits too! That's right my friend. YOU are in serious need of a memorabilia upgrade! But don't fear because the Monkeys are here to help.
If the concept of Press Kit collectibles is new to you, here is a quick primer (source: popculture.suite101.com)
For decades, motion picture studios sent out colorful printed folders to entertainment journalists. These kits contained various production stills, behind-the-scenes pictures, and headshots, with either black-and-white or color 8” x 10” photographs, and/or color slides. The information contained within these kits included production information, actor/director/producer biographies, story synopsis, complete list of credits, and specialized information when appropriate, such as music, special effects, or location information.
In the late 1990s, many studios switched to cheaper electronic press kits where photographs and information were sent to members of the press on CDs. Although some printed and electronic press kits still get sent out for promotional purposes, currently many studios direct members of the press to their publicity websites, where with a secret password, journalists gain access to online production information and downloadable production stills and promotional photographs.
These kits are a great addition for any casual or serious collectors and are surprisingly affordable. While most range from $10 - 50, some of the rarer items are just a tad pricier but not too crazy. The most expensive one we've seen on eBay is only around $500. Press kits are available for movies from 1935 to today and just think about what a great gift they'd make!
