Steve Ouimette EPIC

Steve Ouimette, the six-string samurai behind nearly 100 cover songs from the Guitar Hero franchise, released his debut solo album this week, appropriately entitled EPIC.  Since more than a couple of you have rocked alongside Steve in spirit whilst living out your living room rock star fantasies, why not step inside and take a listen to what this talented musician put together when unbound from the constraints of recreating someone else’s music.

Starting with Guitar Hero III, Steve Ouimette brought to life some classic songs for gamers to click and strum to.  Now that bands realize the value of putting their own material into music games, Ouimette had some time to let his muse speak to him and create his own sounds.  The main set list features 10 original songs, followed by four recordings he did for various iterations of Guitar Hero.  He couldn’t have chosen a better title for this album, because it is an epic listen from start to finish.

The lead off track - “Speaking in Tongues” - was inspired by films like The Exorcist and The Omen (more on how we know this, later).  Ouimette conjures some truly demonic tones from a very low tuned Les Paul baritone guitar for the main riff.

If you are a fan of the guitar in all its many manifestations, the turn in style and genres of this next track will delight you.  “El Toro!” takes the listener into the center of a bull fight, with multiple guitar lines representing both the bull and the matador.

“The Divining Witch” will definitely win you over if names like Steve Morse and Joe Satriani feature on your play lists.  This is a brilliant example of a let-the-guitar-do-the-singing number.

EPIC is not entirely instrumental.  “Lou’s Revenge” is Ouimette’s dark and heavy sequel to his cover of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and features Chris Powers (also from “Devil”) on vocals.  Among the standout tracks on EPIC is another vocal song called “Mr.  Bones”.  Sounding completely different than anything else on the album, this song hooked me instantly, with its Django Reinhardt-style strum (if you played Bioshock, you heard Django’s guitar throughout it) and vocalist Brody Dolyniuk’s nefarious sideshow barker performance.  I challenge you to not tap your feet and sing along to this one.

The “bonus tracks” if you will, comprise some of Ouimette’s more popular recordings from Guitar Hero, including “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”, the squeal-inducing “Dueling Banjos” (we mean squeal of delight because its awesome! Get your minds out of the woods!) and his electrified renditions of holiday traditionals, “Hark” and “We Three Kings”.

Probably one of the best things about EPIC isn’t even on the album itself.  Along with demonstrations of how he played some of the songs, the bonus DVD that comes with the physical version features interviews with Steve Ouimette, detailing the back story of each song on the album.  The interviews are simple, straightforward conversations from the artist, but open up an entirely new level to the listening experience.

Steve Ouimette

Ouimette talking about the writing and recording process is interesting, but it’s his personable, on-camera presence in these video liner notes, describing the stories about the meanings of or what inspired the songs, that really brings a much fuller experience to enjoying the album.  Upon first listen to EPIC, this reviewer had a good idea about what each song represented in terms of sound, if not their deeper meaning.  But after watching the DVD, it painted an entirely different picture, giving a new depth to each piece and making for an even more enjoyable second, third and tenth listen.  Even the vocal pieces and cover tracks benefit from this enhanced experience.

Whether you are a fan of Guitar Hero or if your heroes play guitar, EPIC is an absolute must-listen.  It is available digitally from record label Sumthing Else Music Works and physically from Amazon.

Be sure to check out our interview with Steve Ouimette.

peter jackson defends spooks star richard armitages hobbit casting 00 470 75 Peter Jackson defends Richard Armitages The Hobbit casting

When we first heard that Richard Armitage would be playing mean and moody harp-player Thorin Oakenshield we were pleased.

But it seems that a section of the Internet doesn't agree, forcing Jackson to defend his choice.

"Thorin Oakenshield is a tough, heroic character, and he certainly should give Leggie and Aragorn a run for their money in the heartthrob stakes - despite being four feet tall." Jackson told Entertainment Weekly.

"In Middle-earth, dwarves are a noble race and have a culture and physical appearance which sets them apart from humans. It’s fun to develop these different cultures for the movie, and we are doing much more with dwarves this time around than we did with Gimli in Lord Of The Rings."

"Richard is a powerful actor with a wide range, and we’re very excited to be handing Thorn over to him."

Fair enough, we say. But then we always like it when Peter calls Legolas 'Leggie.'

The Green Hornet - Black Beauty

"Explore one of the sweetest rides in comic book history in this exclusive video tour of The Green Hornet's Black Beauty." Metacafe (via Collider) debuted a new behind-the-scenes featurette presenting an inside look at the mechanics, operation and secret weapons hidden inside the sleek Black Beauty car used in Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry's The Green Hornet (watch the trailer). We've seen this green car on display at Comic-Con for years, so it's not a first look or anything but it is an extensive video and fun to watch if you're an automobile enthusiast or a fan of The Green Hornet. Not sure it'll help win anyone over, though. Enjoy!

Watch the featurette on the Black Beauty car from Sony's The Green Hornet:

The Green Hornet is directed by visionary French filmmaker Michel Gondry, who (in addition to numerous music videos and commercials) previously directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, Dave Chappelle's Block Party and Be Kind Rewind. The screenplay was co-written by Evan Goldberg & Seth Rogen, of Pineapple Express and Superbad. This is based on the classic characters created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker in the 1930s, known best as a TV series in the 60's with Van Williams & Bruce Lee. Sony is bringing The Green Hornet to theaters (in 3D) starting on January 14th next year. Thoughts?

Yes, I love Apple. I will get that right out of the way, but things haven’t always been rosy. My first computer was an Apple IIe that I absolutely adored to death, but if anyone remembers Apple in the  90′s, they will know why I didn’t return to Mac until 2003 after three windows machines. Since then, I haven’t looked back, and I have never felt more excitement for an Apple product than the iPad. That is, until all the negative blogging and tweeting started rolling in.

rtyewyrytwe1 Using Star Trek to Address iPad HatersI couldn’t understand it. I find this device to be a game changer, so I started to read all the negative opinions I could get a hand on. To me, so much of it seemed like real nitpicking, getting down to not what the iPad had, but what it didn’t. They complained about missing hardware specs and software that I just don’t see the general public missing. Yes, I am going to say it, the complaining sounded really nerdy. As a fellow nerd, I want to address these issues in a language the nerds can understand, I am going there… Star Trek.

The driving idea behind Gene Roddenbury’s Star Trek and really what I think accounts for its lasting popularity is the theme of human potential. Star Trek is about what if one day, we all unite as one earth and travel the stars on peaceful missions? Its the ideal future and boy, is it full of gadgets. In fact, the inventor of the cell phone will admit that he guiltily took the idea of the cell phone right from Star Trek. So let’s look at the most recent advance in technology through the Star Trek lens.

The following are the four statements that annoy me most:

1.) “Its nothing but a giant iPhone”

Using Star Trek to Address iPad HatersSince owning my iPhone, I have often called it my Tricorder and Communicator in one. In Star Trek, the  Tricorder is the palm-sized information device and the communicator is a handheld, well… communicator. 75 million buyers can’t be wrong, the iPhone is a wonderful device, so using technology like the iPhone, it is hard not to think of science fiction.  With all the Star Trek video being played during Steve Jobs’ introduction of the iPad, the answer to the giant iPhone debate should have hit me like a ton of bricks.

In Star Trek, the characters carry four gadgets: phaser, tricorder, communicator, and PADDs (yes, they are actually called pads). Now I doubt Apple will ever release a phaser (maybe someday), but the iPhone works nicely as a tricorder/communicator for on-the-go communication and information. Now, the biggest question from those throwing around  the giant iPhone statement is that they already have a smartphone, why do they need a giant iPhone? Well, lets look at how the Star Trek PADDs are used.

The PADDs are book-sized computers that the characters in Star Trek use to read books, messages, watch videos, and write notes. When Captain Janeway is at her desk and needs to go over the Warp drive schematics or the latest redshirt casualties, she has a bigger more legible screen. That is the key. No matter how hard I’ve tried, it is supremely fatiguing to read, write, or watch anything long form on a screen as small as a smartphone. Gene Roddenbury knew this. Steve Jobs knows this. Why can’t so many people see this now?

2.) “There are no camera(s)!”

Yes, at first I was sort of taken aback by this as well.  Where is the still-camera for taking pictures? Where is the iSight for video conferencing? Then I thought again back to the Star Trek tricorder/tablet idea.

A still-camera is a hand-held device, one that most likely already have a decent version of in their smartphone or (gasp) dedicated digital camera. Imagine holding up a ten-inch device to take and line up a picture while keeping your dignity. The iPad offers wireless syncing with iphone and a usb or sd card connection to digital cameras. So that solves that problem.

Next comes video conferencing. In my experience, starting a video chat with someone means you want an extended conversation. So here are your options: place the iPad in your lap or hold the iPad. So you place the iPad in your lap and imagine the view you are treating your friend to. Nothing but chin. Lets try holding it up for a better view. The iPad weighs 1.5 pounds. Get a liter of soda and hold that at arms length in front of your face for 30 minutes. I dare you.

Additionally, I ask you dear reader if you have ever had someone give you a “tour” of the apartment in a video chat? Not only is it motion sickness inducing, but the video compression just can’t deal with jerky movements. You need to hold the camera completely still. Are you still holding that liter of soda?

The iPad isn’t the tricorder/communicator. Most already  have one of those  that fit in a pocket. On Star Trek, they only video conferenced on the view screen attached to the wall or on their desktop. Cameras make no sense for the iPad.

3.) “The operating system is just iPhone OS, I wanted full Mac OS X”

The PADD on Star Trek never seemed to be running the full LCARS (Library Computer Access and Retrieval System) Operating system that the bigger computers used on Star Trek. Thats because the PADD was used in a completely different way. Picard would pick one up off his desk, hit a few buttons, and set it down. Fast, simple operation, a standard operating system just isn’t built that way. A tablet device is a different kind of use model.

PADD 2150s1 Using Star Trek to Address iPad Haters

The concept of a tablet PC has been around for as long as desktops and since 2000, Microsoft has tried desperately to make them work. They were out there for ten years, sitting in the stores, running full Windows and most with a physical keyboard. How many of us bought them? Show of hands?

The answer is basically none of us. They were too clunky, the stylus would break or get lost, the physical hinge where it flipped open would pop…

Using a tablet computer with your finger is the Star Trek style.  The touchscreens are easy, natural-feeling, and best of all you can’t lose your finger under the couch. For that kind of pointing device you need a different kind of user interface. I think the biggest problem is the name “iPhone OS”, it really should just be called “MacOS Touch” or keep the cats going with “MacOS Paws”. It has all the core power of Mac Os, but made for use with your fingers.

4.) “$499-850 is too much”

Lets face it, Apple could have easily charged $999 for this device, but they didn’t. As I said before, the  PADDs on Star Trek are multifunction devices. The characters on Star Trek use it to read up on Romulan Ale recipes, but then switch to take notes on it. The iPad too can be anything. Apple released a 9.7 inch touchscreen that connects to the internet and opened the door to developers to make it become whatever the user needs, just like the PADD.
video 201001271 Using Star Trek to Address iPad Haters

Personally, I was thinking of eventually buying three different devices down the road: a Kindle ($289), a new Apple laptop for basic on the go computing ($1200), and a Wacom Cintique ($999). For those who don’t know, the latter is a drawing tablet used for digital art. After seeing the $4.99 brushes app for the iPad, The Cintique became instantly irrelevant for me. Eventually, I would have spent $2,500, when the $499 iPad does all of the functions of those devices arguably better. And that is just me. For every person, the tablet will be something different thanks to the App Store.

The Bottom Line

There was a hole in our gadget environment and Apple firmly patched that hole with the invention of the PADD. If you can not see that yet and fervently disagree with me, please comment away below. I will last mention that while a lot of online coverage of the coming iPad was poor from those who haven’t held one in person, almost all of the coverage from the tech-journalists and bloggers who were at the event, picked up the device, and played with it had an overwhelmingly positive reception of it. I guess it comes down to whether you are a Captain Kirk and need to punch and mess around with alien life to understand it, or a Captain Picard, who thinks through every side of an issue.

If you don’t like the device, don’t assimulate and buy it. I know I will be and am positive so will millions of others. Resistance is futile.

Kris McCray (6-1) was just 15 years old when his daughter, Octavia, was born, and the trials and tribulations associated with being a young father is something he looks back on with pride; pride, that in spite of the chips being stacked up against him, he still made his dream of becoming a UFC fighter a reality, while simultaneously maintaining his integrity as a father.

“In the beginning it was tough because I couldn’t work,” says McCray, a runner up on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Liddell vs Team Ortiz. “In school, at PTA meetings, the other parents would look down on me, asking how old I was and treating me like some flunky from the ghetto,” he said.

McCray worked jobs ranging from coaching high school wrestling to serving six years in the Army reserves, making it hard for the young father to keep his eye on the prize.

“Financially, supporting Octavia was tough. We talked and I told her I wanted to pursue fighting, and that I would not be able to be a father in that traditional sense – that I had to put everything into this. She was cool and as long as I called her once in a while she understood. As I was more and more successful and the money was coming in I was able to support her more, and now she’s 15 and proud of her Dad,” says McCray.

In fact, Kris says after UFC 122, where the former middleweight be making his welterweight debut against Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialist Carlos Eduardo Rocha (8-0), he plans to visit his daughter’s high school during career week.

“It was cool for her when I was on the show, because her classmates and her teachers saw me on television, and that means a lot when you’re at her age,” he says.

After TUF, McCray had a lot of options when it came to training for UFC 122, and he thought about heading to San Jose, CA to train at AKA, where Cain Velasquez, Josh Koscheck, and Jon Fitch are staples under trainer Javier Mendez, but then fate stepped in.

“One of my sponsors, Tony Jimenez of Microtech, called Frankie Edgar and asked if I could train with him since it was closer to my home in Virginia, and next thing I know I’m staying here on the Jersey Shore,” he said. McCray’s made himself at home at Edgar’s father-in-law Jerry’s house, where he says he has a great place to stay, “clean” food and a strict training schedule.

“Jerry’s been an angel sent from God,” says McCray. “All I have to do while I’m here is train. I have everything I need. He makes sure I get to training and working out with the champ has been awesome,” he says.

McCray is getting a first-hand look at what it takes to get to the top of the food chain, training alongside Edgar with fighters like Renzo Gracie, Ricardo Almeida, Eddie Alvarez, Rolles and Gregor Gracie and Rafael “Sapo” Natal.

“Frankie’s got a motor in him,” says McCray. “I am getting great work in. He’s got great partners and it’s pretty clear watching them and training with them why Frankie’s the champ. Ricardo (Almeida) is fine tuning my ground game, making sure I know how to counter all the techniques Rocha will throw at me, and then I get to wrestle full on with the Rutgers wrestling team.”

Edgar is an assistant wrestling coach for the Scarlet Knights.

McCray has also been up to New York City to train at Renzo Gracie’s academy, where he says there are plenty of big guys to roll with.

“I’m a little big rolling with Frankie, but the champ holds his own that’s for sure,” he says. “But between Rutgers and Renzo’s there are a lot of tough guys, and Ricardo’s a 170 pounder too so I’ve got everything I need,” says McCray.

And he will need all the rolling he can get. His opponent, Rocha, is 8-0 and has submitted all but one of his opponents up to this point. Rocha will be making his UFC debut and looking to make a statement with a win over the TUF alum.

“I think we match up pretty well,” says McCray. “It will be a classic ground and pound guy versus a jiu jitsu guy, so it’s going to be a pretty exciting fight. I want to put on a good show, and hopefully my fight will make it on television.”

McCray’s fight with Rocha will be the first bout on the undercard , but he says the low billing doesn’t bother him at all.

“I just can’t wait to get out there and do my thing, get the W and then have a German beer and become a fan and watch the rest of the more established guys go at it.”

For Kris, UFC 122 in Oberhausen, Germany is somewhat of a homecoming. As a military brat, he was born in Schweinfurt, Germany, where his father, a 1st Sergeant in the Army was stationed.

“I know the culture’s changed a lot since I’ve been there,” says McCray. “Last time I was there they used marks. Now they have euros. But I have a lot of friends still there, and I can’t wait to see them.”

McCray says growing up with a strict Army father was great preparation for his life inside The Octagon.

“I was 21 years old and my father was making me drop down and do pushups if I did something wrong,” he says. “My friends would be like ‘damn, you’re a grown man,’ and I was like, ‘yeah but he can still mess me up,” he said.

An American Werewolf In London

An American Werewolf In London is visiting London Zoo this weekend for a free Halloween screening of the horror classic.

Following in the footsteps of Secret Cinema, the showing comes courtesy of Volkswagen and its See Film Differently campaign, which aims to “provide film fans with an alternate take on cinema” with films screened in interesting locales.

Werewolf In London is the campaign’s first event, and will take place on 31 October at the zoo – which featured in John Landis’ much-loved film.

Not only will you get to see the film for free, but a tour of the film’s location is on offer, alongside an exhibition of original props and appearances from talent linked to the flick (will David Naughton or Jenny Agutter make an appearance? Guess we’ll have to wait and see).

red cast WIDE EXCLUSIVE Interview: Felicia Day Modernizes LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD With Werewolf Slayage In RED

Earlier this week, SciFi Mafia had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Felicia Day (The Guild, Eureka), star of SyFy’s Red: Werewolf Hunter premiering tonight. Red is part of SyFy’s series of modernized fairy tales like Beauty and the Beast and Hansel and Gretel and tonight’s installment is just what we need to celebrate Halloween.

Day stars in Red: Werewolf Hunter along with Kavan Smith (Stargate: Extinction, Eureka) and Stephen McHattie (Immortals, Happy Town). Day portrays Virginia Sullivan, “a descendant of Little Red Riding Hood [who] brings her fiancé home to meet her family and tell him about the family business – they are werewolf hunters.”

Just how does Red modernize the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood? Day tells us how we go from the fairy tale of a victim of a wolf attack to perpetrating slayage on werewolves.

SciFi Mafia:  Felicia, let’s talk a little bit about the mythology of your character’s family and how we get to the storyline of Red coming from the fairytale.

At the end of the Grimm version of Little Red Riding Hood, Riding Hood and her grandmother do actually set a trap for another opportunistic wolf having learned from their first experience with one. Does Red take the story from that point and progress it forward to a werewolf-hunting in a modernization of the story?

Felicia Day:  I think that was definitely the inspiration from it. I think the fairytale itself was only like a jumping off point about the idea that if the first Red Riding Hood killed the first wolf then what if they felt like the responsibility was to kill all wolves forever and keep them away from the world.

So, I mean, it’s not so much a literal I think interpretation as just a jumping off point of the idea that you have werewolves joined with that fairytale which I think is kind of a clever thing.

SFM:  Are you more of a werewolf person or a vampire person? Because people are usually one or the other.

Felicia Day:  Yeah, I mean, I think there has been really fun stuff on both ends as far as literature. I love Mercedes Thompson (or Mercy Thompson). Those books are fantastic ones that made me love werewolves in a way that I didn’t like before.

So I have to say that vampires are definitely my preference but there are certain books that bring werewolves to life really, really well and hopefully that will kind of continue into Red be a sort of humanization or anthropomorphize them, is that the word?

SFM:  Well I’m an old skool vamp lover so I’m firmly in the werewolf-killing camp. I’ll be cheering you on.

Felicia Day:  You’ll be enjoying what happens in the movie then.

SFM:  Yes, I hope so! And what was the most fun you had in that role?

red felicia day 560x372 EXCLUSIVE Interview: Felicia Day Modernizes LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD With Werewolf Slayage In RED

Felicia Day:  It was fun like at the – I love doing the fights things, I really did. Being able to run and jump on people and like slash and learning how to use a gun. Like I said, I actually went and trained and went to a shooting range and shot real guns to do that because I didn’t want to look like I didn’t know how to handle a firearm which was really fun.

Those are the fun things in acting when you can learn something new and you take that through. It changes you. Those things just add to who you are and what you know how to do.

SFM:  Excellent. Well I can’t wait to watch Red when it premieres this weekend. And you are a huge inspiration for geek girls everywhere so thank you very much and we love you.

Felicia Day:  Oh thank you so much for saying that. It really does mean a lot to me.

SFM:   Thank you!

Check out the trailer and sneak peek of Red.

Don’t miss the premiere of SyFy’s Red: Werewolf Hunter, starring Felicia Day tonight, Saturday, October 30th at 9/8C on SyFy.

Video: Making of The Green Hornets Black BeautyOne of the most anticipated movies coming early next year is The Green Hornet, starring funnyman Seth Rogen in his first-ever role as a superhero, with Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, and Christopher Waltz in supporting roles.

Based upon the original ABC series, the 3-D film centers on Britt Reid, the son of a rich newspaper magnate, who finds his life turned around after meeting one of the employees of his media empire, Kato (Chou). Using the tried-and-true recipe of “bad boy makes good,” the two, with the assistance of Reid’s beautiful secretary Lenore (Diaz), debut as crimefighters taking on the underworld kingpin Chudnofsky (Waltz).

One can arguably suggest that the biggest unknown star of this action flick is The Black Beauty, a highly modified Chrysler Imperial Crown, which was one of the most luxurious (and largest) American cars of the mid-sixties. Here’s a video showing the construction of and attributes of this super car.

There were actually 29 1964-1966 Imperials used in various filming of scenes and stunts. Incredibly, in today’s world of product placement, the producers of The Green Hornet turned down deals with both BMW and General Motors for use of their vehicles (although powered by a GM engine) as the basis for the newest Black Beauty, instead deciding on the original vehicle. What a fitting tribute to the Imperial Crown!

Noomi Rapace

Ridley Scott has been all over Hollywoodtown looking for the right female lead for his Alien prequels.

Now it seems he’s found his girl, with Deadline reporting that Swedish Girl With The Dragon Tattoo ass-kicker Noomi Rapace is his favourite for the ET epic.

Though Scott also met with the likes of Carey Mulligan, Abbie Cornish, Gemma Arterton and Natalie Portman, he’s obviously spotted something in Rapace that he likes. We imagine her role as a take-no-prisoners hacker in the Millennium Trilogy helped a bit.

Apparently studio 20th Century Fox will now “be heavily involved in the ultimate decision”, with previous reports angling that Natalie Portman was the studio’s alien fighter of choice.

We’ll have to wait a little longer, then, to find out who’ll be confronting that giant Space Jockey – along with the xenomorphs. Let the final casting battle commence!

512Kb3ix8VL. SL160 Ridley Scott wants Noomi Rapace for Alien prequel

After 12 years of thinking about it (and waiting for movie technology to catch up with his visions), James Cameron followed up his unsinkable Titanic with Avatar, a sci-fi epic meant to trump all previous sci-fi epics. Set in the future on a distant planet, Avatar spins a simple little parable about greedy colonizers (that would be mankind) messing up the lush tribal world of Pandora. A paraplegic Marine named Jake (Sam Worthington) acts through a 9-foot-tall avatar that allows him to roam the p
